Yesterday's stars at today's prices
Well, one Oscar winner (Patty Duke) plus plenty of offbeat, appreciated stars of every medium there is, all converging at the Chiller Theatre autograph show out in Parsippany. It happened, and I was there, greeting them all for this week's column.
This week's column is an explosive jaunt to a New Jersey autograph show (Kevin Clement's Chiller Theatre), where you could buy signed photos of your favorite cult stars or simply ogle them from a safe distance. Angelo Pitillo went up in their faces and captured the magique.
In 1998, Betty Buckley played the immortal stage-mother role of Mama Rose in the Papermill Playhouse of Gypsy, with Debbie Gibson as the title character. It was good (I saw it, naturally), with Buckley bringing her customary wells of emotion to the material. And it was going to transfer to Toronto ... More >>
My pal and fellow '80s survivor Debbie Gibson might not be an electric youth anymore--Who is?--but she's still got her head, and hat, on straight. Her tweets are fun and honest, especially when countering the plentiful dummos out there.
In honor of Kenny G's four-night stand at the Blue Note, which kicks off tonight, we thought we'd look back at some of the key moments in the life of smooth jazz's most mysterious, misunderstood, and feared figure. Today is Groundhog Day, and while rodents on the East Coast are split on whether or not 2012 will actually see something resembling winter around these parts, one thing's for sure: People will probably watch the 1993 Harold Ramis-directed Bill Murray vehicle Groundhog Day, in which the comedian play ... The Devil's advocate speaks in Rock And Roll Always Forgets
Over the weekend SOTC pal Ann Powers wondered about what the music of Occupy Wall Street might be, and she discussed the drop-ins by the likes of Jeff Mangum and Talib Kweli as well as the music emanating from the park's current residents; she also mused on the "human microphone," the means by which ... Yeasayer. Here's hoping things are a bit warmer than this for their shows this summer. Today Live Nation announced a slew of shows at Long Island's Nikon at Jones Beach Theater and New Jersey's PNC Bank Arts Center, and in addition to the many classic rock acts (with "classic rock" now being ... We are never truly alone, Tiffany. So here's a real thing you can pay money to go see: bygone '80s teen idols Debbie Gibson and Tiffany, on one night on one stage, specifically the Canal Room's, as part of another Back to the Eighties fete also featuring an era tribute band reasonably named Rubix ... Another onetime chart-topper, like an Olivia Newton-John or a Deborah Gibson?
I wore straight-up hiking boots to this motherfucker, clunky and impenetrable, and sloshed invincibly across acres of gushy, foul-smelling New Jersey mud like a hovercraft, like a Range Rover, like God moving across the face of the waters. The mud is what we'll all remember about APW, first broug ... More >>
