2011 Editions of Michelin and Zagat Are Out, Ready to Aid the Numerically Fixated
It's quite a watershed week for numbers-obsessed diners: Zagat released its 2011 New York City survey today, and tomorrow the Michelin Guide 2011 will be inflicted upon the public.
Brooklyn reigns in Zagatland, with Mile End snagging the designation of Best Deli from longtime winner Barney Greengrass, and Tanoreen, Fette Sau, Egg, and Pacificana winning best Middle Eastern, barbecue, Southern, and Chinese food, respectively.
The survey is also the first time Zagat has included food trucks, with Wafels & Dinges, Street Sweets, and Van Leeuwen all winning favor among voters.
Unsurprisingly, neither food trucks nor Brooklyn have as much of a presence in the Michelin Guide, which limits its largesse largely to Manhattan and exclusively to the immobile. No big surprises here, though despite its four-star Times review, Del Posto still couldn't win back the Michelin star it lost last year, while both Insieme and Perry Street also shed a star. Chef Table at Brooklyn Fare, Kaijitsu, Marea, the Breslin, Soto, Aldea, A Voce Madison, and Laut are all new inclusions, but perhaps the biggest news is that the Michelin inspectors found their way to Queens, bestowing one star upon Forest Hills' Danny Brown Wine Bar & Kitchen. The full list, which doesn't include Michelin's Bib Gourmand picks, follows below.
