500-Foot Rule Passes
The Villager reports that the State legislature has passed a bill strengthening the 500-foot rule, making it much more difficult for bar or club owners to open an establishment if there are already three or more liquor licenses in the vicinity. The bill, sponsored by Senator Daniel Squadron and Assemblymember Robin Schimminger, was created in response to a State Supreme Court ruling last November that weakened the rule, applying it only to three or more licenses of the same type. The bill has now passed both branches of the legislature, and is expected to be signed by Governor Paterson.
