A Sriracha Talk and Free Chili on This Week's To-Do List
There's no telling what you might eat at The Explorers Club
February flew by, which is lucky because this winter has been brutal. Find incentive to emerge from hibernation in this week's top events.
A Fork In The Road Book Reading, The Strand, 828 Broadway, Tuesday, 7 p.m.
In celebration of Lonely Planet's latest guide, a collection of over 30 original stories from chefs and other fooderati, editor James Oseland will lead a panel of personalities like Sigrid Nunez and Josh Ozersky, who will discuss their favorite meals and travel stories. Attendees can gain admittance by purchasing a copy of the book or a $15 Strand gift card on the bookstore's website.
Burnin' Down the Mouth, Littlefield, 622 Degraw Street, Brooklyn, Tuesday, 7:30 p.m.
Stop by this art gallery for a discussion on the cultural impact of spicy food. Learn about Sriracha, the mysterious ghost pepper, what chilies are used for Indian and Thai food, and how we derive heat right here at home. The event is free to attend and those interested need only bring an I.D. -- the event is 21 and up.
National Chili Day, multiple locations, Thursday
Take advantage of a free giveaway that'll warm your bones. Virgil's Real Barbecue will be handing out free samples of its Texas chili from noon to 2 p.m. in celebration of this food holiday; if you're craving a full size bowl, you can always head to places like Hill Country and Morgan's.
Kayaking Around the World with Jon Bowermaster, The Explorers Club, 46 East 70 Street, Thursday, 6 p.m.
If you're a seafood fanatic, consider checking out this documentary about the planet's oceans. For $70, non-Explorer Club members can attend a screening of Bowermaster's film, which recaps a 10 year journey across the globe and focuses on the ocean's health and the lives of the people who depend on that status. The event includes a three-course dinner, light bites, and an open bar. Additional information regarding the event and how to attend is available on the Explorers Club website.
