Anti-Energy Drink Comes to NYC
Some of you got kind of, um, excited the last time I posted about Drank, the "anti-energy" drink that claims to "slow your roll." Because I am so deeply uncool, a commenter had to let me on the implicit model for the stuff:
"purple drank," a.k.a. Sprite with prescription cough syrup containing promethazine and codeine. It was popularized by Houston's DJ Screw, who happened to die from OD'ing on the stuff, and is very popular in the hip hop community in the south.
Okay, but the press release says:
Every aspect of this calming drink was inspired by today’s popular hip hop artists who embrace the much sought-after hip hop lifestyle that encourages people to capture a stress-free state of mind.
So what they mean by "stress-free state of mind" is actually a "codine stupor." Excellent. Well, I don't know if the melatonin, valerian root and rose hips in the convenience store-version of Drank is really going to do that for you, but now you can find out yourself.
As of Wednesday, you'll be able to find Drank in convenience stores in Manhattan and the Bronx. It's being distributed by Good O Beverage Company, which is headquartered in the Bronx. Carry on.
