Smoked fish is Greengrass's calling card--and the platter price is worth every penny.

There are ever fewer places worthy of the moniker "New York institutiton", but the Upper West Side's Barney Greengrass is assuredly one of those spots. A few years older than that other famous appetizing shop on Houston Street (yes, we're talking about Russ & Daughters), Greengrass deals in old world hospitality, preserving traditions along with their sumptuous smoked fish and deli meats (and with an equal amount of vigor). Fish is the deli's calling card, and no visit is complete without a taste of Nova Scotia salmon, buttery smoked sturgeon, or paprika-laced sable. Each slice yields with luxurious softness, sporting mild smoke and saline richness. Served with lettuce and tomato, we enjoy ours bundled atop a toasted bagel slicked with scallion cream cheese. Such decadence comes at a price ($29-$95), but after your first taste, it's not hard to see how a once-in-a-lifetime experience could become a once-a-month indulgence.
