Bedford Cheese Shop Is Going Big. Really Big.
We remember Bedford Cheese Shop in its infancy, when it was a wee little thing tucked between a coffee shop and a hair salon in the Williamsburg mini-mall. How times have changed: Five years after growing into its very own Bedford Avenue storefront, the shop is expanding to Manhattan in a steroidal sort of way.
Per Grub Street, Bedford Cheese will open a 5,000-square-foot store on Irving Place between 18th and 19th streets in the fall. It will house three cheese caves for aging cheese and a classroom that will host visiting curd experts. Bedford's expansion follows those of Saxelby Cheesemongers, which opened a large cheese-aging facility in Red Hook this spring, and Stinky Bklyn, which relocated to a new, larger store in March.
As GS notes, Bedford's Manhattan store will be a curd's throw from the enormous Beecher cheese factory and retail store opening at Broadway and 20th Street later this month. Between the two of them and the extensive cheese selection at Eataly, Flatiron will soon be the most fragrant neighborhood in Manhattan.
