Big Beef Puts Its Hoof in Michael Pollan's Mouth
Apparently, Michael's Pollan hasn't made too many friends in the meat industry: The Harris Ranch Beef Co. threatened to yank $500,000 in pledges from California Polytechnic State University after the school scheduled a speech by the crusading writer and activist. Following a letter from the Harris CEO to the university's president, the Pollan speech was turned into a panel discussion between the author and two other speakers. In university circles, this is called a suppression of academic freedom; in the beef industry, it's called turning cows into sausage.
