Birdies Has Flown the Coop
Eater brings word that Birdies, Grandma's Chicken for the People, the fried chicken spot that Pharoah Masters opened in the former Flor's space two years ago, has closed its doors and is heading south. The tiny restaurant, located on First Avenue near 10th Street, was often disparaged by fried chicken fanatics -- one Yelper asked, "are you my alcoholic grandma who always forgets my birthday and flashed my friends at Thanksgiving?" -- although it gained a measure of fame when a hawk decided to dine there. That said, the late restaurant does deserve some credit for throwing chickens into fryers long before every other chef in Lower Manhattan deemed it fashionable.
