Fried chicken sandwich from Bobwhite Lunch & Supper Counter (94 Avenue C, 212-228-2972), $8.50

Bobwhite's fried chicken is worth a trek from the train -- not least because it's affordable.

That Bobwhite Lunch & Supper Counter is a bit of a hike off the train -- the spot is located between 6th and 7th Streets on Avenue C -- hasn't deterred the masses that are willing to wait for one of the handful of stools here. Perhaps because the spot offers a heaping of food for a solid value, and the beers are reasonably priced, too. The best deal on this menu is likely the fried chicken supper for four, which nets you a dozen pieces of chicken plus biscuits and sides for just $12 per person. But if you have only $10 in your pocket -- the parameters of this column -- you can still eat well and get full here. Spring for the fried chicken sandwich, which gets you a slab of juicy bird encased in crackly golden batter topped with homemade bread and butter pickles and served between two halves of a soft white bun.
