Bosie Tea Parlor: A Salon Worthy of Oscar Wilde

We're suckers for afternoon tea -- those little crustless sandwiches! Scones with clotted cream! Petit fours! So when we heard about Bosie Tea Parlor (10 Morton Street, 212-352-9900) in the West Village, we simply had to pop in for a cuppa.

Named for Oscar Wilde's lover, Lord Alfred Bruce Douglas (the owner is a big fan of the writer), the restaurant offers a full selection of pastries, tea sandwiches, quiches, and panini, as well as tea from l'Âge de Thé (a fine selection of black, green, white, roiboos, and flavored varieties), created by Kiley Holliday, who was the youngest female tea master certified when she completed her studies.

Several wooden tables are parked in the front of the room, although four armchairs are found in a back nook, along with a selection of books for browsing. Soft classical music added to the serene ambiance -- a feat given that bustling Seventh Avenue South is just around the corner. All in all, a tranquil ambiance that is ideal for a peaceful brunch or for bringing your laptop and working.

We sampled the caramel-flavored black tea ($4, pictured above) and the peach-scented white tea ($5) -- both well-brewed and reasonably priced compared with many of the city's other tea parlors.

Tea sandwiches ($9.50 for three types) included a decent curried chicken option; a nice smoked salmon and cream cheese, kissed with lemon zest; and a very good cucumber.

Quiche Lorraine ($9), though, was even better, chock-full of smoky lardons and still slightly jiggly in the center. The accompanying mesclun salad was overdressed with a very acidic vinaigrette, though.

For dessert, we opted for the Darjeeling tart ($6), in which a tart shell was filled with Darjeeling ganache and Darjeeling Chantilly cream, and topped with nougatine. The tea flavor was strong but not overpowering, and overall quite tasty. Recommended, for sure.

Given our love of macarons, we sprung for two here ($2 apiece). While the flavors were interesting (we chose jasmine and salted caramel, though others included matcha, passion fruit, raspberry, and peanut butter 'n' jelly), they were dense and on the heavy side. Not bad, just not amazing.

All in all, Bosie offers a tranquil and affordable setting for afternoon tea, and we'd come back to check out the full-on afternoon tea set ($25 for one person). Or maybe just curl up with a cup of Earl Grey and The Picture of Dorian Gray.
