Brooklyn Victory Garden Brings Local Food to Clinton Hill

Clinton Hill locavores who can't wait for the Greene Hill Co-op can breathe easy. Brooklyn Victory Garden rolled up the gate to its storefront for the first time last week, revealing its adorable contents to Fulton Street. The general store specializes in local, pastured, and sustainable meats and cheeses from producers like Coach Farm, the Cellars at Jasper Hill, and Hardwick Beef, as well as gift items like aprons, jewelry, handmade cards, and T-shirts by Black Sheep Heap. Husband-and-wife team Tess Gill and Tom Bartos live around the corner from the shop.

The couple have plans to eventually start serving a small menu of muffins, grilled cheese sandwiches, and coffee -- just drip, no espresso, from Crop to Cup -- as well as feature a rotating cast of artists' works. They also say they might offer turkeys during the holidays.

"We want to keep things local," says Bartos. Judging from the steady trickle of customers coming in already, looks like the neighbors do, too.
