Dish no. 78: Feast for two at Bunna Cafe (1084 Flushing Avenue, Brooklyn, 347-295-2227)

When people ask us to name exciting restaurants that have opened in the past year, Bunna Cafe is often the first name out of our mouths. New York City is short on Ethiopian options, and so this is an excellent entrant for anyone craving fitfit and wots. It also happens to be vegan, following the tradition of an Ethiopian holiday during which people abstain from animal products. The best way to experience the place is to go with a friend willing to share; you'll be able to order a platter stocked with every dish on the menu, nine items in total, which range from spicy misir wot (red lentils) to smoky shiro (chickpeas) to a cool kale salad tossed with lime and avocado. Mop up the dregs with sour injera flatbread, and wash it down with a beer -- Bunna just got its liquor license. Don't miss the traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony, offered daily, either.

In advance of our 2014 Best of NYC issue, we're traipsing through the boroughs and divulging our favorite dishes of the year. They're presented here as a countdown, but we're listing them in no particular order. Consider this a guide to what's good to eat in this town right this very second.
