Cafe Ghia's Biscuits and Gravy, One of Our 100 Favorite Dishes
No. 22: Biscuits and gravy from Cafe Ghia
Cafe Ghia offers an impressive roster of brunch fare, but you'll want to eat this version of a classic southern staple until you're about to be sick.
We knew before we'd polished off the dregs of our massive brunch feast at Cafe Ghia that we'd found a spot worth slotting into regular rotation: From a bloody mary thick with horseradish to robust bottomless coffee to a Belgian waffle special covered in toffee and brown sugared sweet potatoes, every single thing that hit our table was good enough that we wanted to eat until we were sick. But since we're forced to pick just one item for our favorite dish, we'll bestow the honors on the biscuits and gravy. Two biscuits, buttery and crumbly but still weighty enough not to become soggy, rest in a thick pool of bacon-studded gravy so packed with porky flavor you'll wonder if there's much else besides bacon drippings in the recipe. We added a fried egg--and requested our side of juicy, piquant sausage be placed atop the quivering mass--but both of those accoutrements turned out to be unnecessary. The base of the dish holds up just fine on its own. Oh, and by the way--while you'll have to wait until Saturday for this hefty affair (biscuits and gravy are a weekend-only affair), you can try the rest of Ghia's brunch menu today, if you'd like. The restaurant does brunch, lunch, and dinner daily.
Later this year, we'll pen our Best of New York issue, our annual love letter to what's great in this town. When that paper hits the streets, you'll find our picks for the very best this city has to offer when it comes to dozens of cuisines, restaurants, dishes, and drinks. Until then, you can get a taste of our contenders as we count down, in no particular order, our 100 favorite dishes from around the boroughs, a list of laudable eats worth tracking down right now.
