Cake Man Raven in Trouble With the Labor Department
Mario Batali isn't the only one with labor violation woes: Cakeman Raven, whose eponymous Fort Greene bakery is renowned for its red velvet cake, has been issued an order by the Labor Department over unpaid wages.
Crain's reports that the Cake Man, also known as Raven Patrick De'Sean Dennis III, has reportedly failed to respond to complaints that his company owes three workers $2,600 in unpaid wages. Because the Labor Department doesn't like being ignored, it's piled on interest and almost $3,000 worth of penalties, which means that the Cake Man needs to cough up a total of $11,000. He has 60 days to make an appeal.
This isn't the first time the Cake Man has run afoul of the law: In 2008, 15 of his workers filed suit against his company, alleging they were owed $750,000, or six years' worth of unpaid overtime. And in addition to the latest complaint, there are three others on file with the Labor Department. Which leads us to conclude that his famous red velvet cake gets its distinctive hue from his staff's blood, sweat, and tears.
