New York is home to some of the best food (and chefs) in the world. It's also one of the most expensive places to live. Between eating and drinking across town, live shows, entertainment, and even just paying rent, chances are you've been forced to squeeze every last cent out of that paycheck before the next one hits the bank. Give your wallet a break this week with La Goulette's (159 Grand Street, Brooklyn; 347-689-4126) lamb merguez pita.
Featuring Tunisian and Middle Eastern fare, this casual Williamsburg spot offers a wide range of healthy dishes for $10 and under. But it's the Tunisian lamb merguez sausage pita that has us most excited.
For just $8, a soft pita is filled to the brim with the spicy strips of housemade grilled merguez, made from a secret family recipe. Originating in North Africa (and later making its way to France), the crimson sausage bursts with flavor from harissa and other exotic spices, like sumac, fennel, and garlic. It sits above chopped lettuce, cucumber, red onion, marinated cabbage, and a layer of homemade hummus. A creamy and piquant harissa hot sauce is drizzled on top, if you like. Cherry tomatoes, parsley, green onion, and tahini sauce finish it off.
The sandwich should be enough to satiate large appetites; it's nearly the size of the basket in which it's served. But if you really feel you need to throw in some starch, a side of fries is just $1.75.
The chicken shawarma
Say you want to bring along a friend who doesn't go for lamb or sausage -- the spot offers several other pitas for around the same price. The chicken shawarma ($7) is one of the most popular options. Filled with chicken breast, hummus, cabbage, cucumber, lettuce, dairy-free tahini, and a dash of roasted red pepper hot sauce, it's fresh, healthy, and a hell of a lot more interesting than your average poultry-filled sub.
