Cheburechnaya's Chebureki, One of Our 100 Favorite Dishes

Dish no. 37, Chebureki from Cheburechnaya, (92-09 63rd Drive, Queens; 718-897-9080)

Cheburechnaya is a star of Rego Park's culinary landscape, specializing in the cuisine of Bukharians -- an ethnic group comprising Jews from Uzbekistan -- which you're unlikely to find outside the Queens neighborhood. Among the Silk Road-inspired offerings at this kosher restaurant are chebureki, savory pastries with fillings that reflect the many influences upon Central Asian food. Despite being fried, the golden, crisp turnovers are light, and at under $2 each, it's painless to sample several -- the mutton, pumpkin, and fennel-flecked cabbage versions are particularly worth a try.

In advance of our 2014 Best of NYC issue, we're traipsing through the boroughs and divulging our favorite dishes of the year. They're presented here as a countdown, but we're listing them in no particular order. Consider this a guide to what's good to eat in this town right this very second.
