Counter Is Still Hanging on to Life, Seitan Burgers

The demise of Counter, the East Village vegetarian oasis, seemed imminent last November, when Alex Stupak announced he'd be opening a location of Empellón in the space the restaurant occupies on First Avenue. But according to a sign on the window spotted by an EV Grieve reader, Counter still has another few months left of life.
The message in the window was written by the restaurant's executive chef, Elena Balletta, and explains that while Counter will indeed be closing, there is not yet "a concrete closing date," and that it will "most likely [be open] another few months."
In December, Counter's owner, Deborah Gavito, told Gothamist that she was thinking of reopening the restaurant in either Williamsburg or Greenpoint, and emphasized that she had not been priced out of the East Village. Get on over for an East Side Burger and almond-crusted tofu while you can.
