Craving Oysters Right Now In NYC? There's an App for That

Every card-carrying ostreaphile can look forward to a new (free) app launching today, which will hook up oyster lovers with NYC establishments serving them.

Pearl, based in New York City, is riding the wave of mobile technology allowing consumers to access more information about the food they eat. Pearl CEO Sam Asher says, “We believe that diners want more access to information about the seafood they’re eating, just as they do with other menu items.”

The app aims to provide up-to-the-minute updates from restaurants, detailing daily oyster availability and happy hour specials. It will also help users track where their favorite oyster varieties are being served at that exact moment.

Craving Rhode Island Moonstones? You can use Pearl to locate them using its search function, which aggregates real-time information. Ideally, the time between feeling an oyster-urge and actually savoring them at the nearest oyster bar will be minimal. Users will also be able to see individual oyster profiles, rate, and save them. To start, Pearl has more than 150 restaurants and oyster farmers participating; some here in the city, as well as in Boston and San Francisco. We plan to give Pearl a test-drive — check back soon for a performance update.
