Davidovich's Bagels, Our Cheap Eat of the Day
Bagels (and sandwiches) from Davidovich, Essex Street Market, 120 Essex Street, Booth 6, $1 to $7.99
At the first retail location of a rising star NYC bagel-maker, you'll find a slew of budget-friendly breakfast and lunch staples.
Perhaps it's testament to how badly the Lower East Side needed a decent grab-and-go coffee stand that Davidovich had a daily morning line nearly the second it opened in a sunny corner of the Essex Street Market. It helped too, of course, that the wholesaler has built a 15-year reputation for its bagels, which are made from an old Davidovich family recipe that's won over staunch torus-shaped baked good traditionalists. This flagship location will eventually spawn an empire, the family hopes, though for now, it makes an ideal stop for a cheap breakfast or lunch if you find yourself in the neighborhood of Delancey and Essex. The everything bagel with cream cheese runs just $1.99, and the bagel sports proper fluff, density, and chew plus the flavor pops that come from poppy seed, onion, and garlic. Get your bagel topped with lox, red onions, capers, and tomato slices for $7.99; whitefish rings in at $6.99. The shop also sells a decent cup of coffee for just $1.50, and pastries -- including the obligatory cronut knock-off -- are under $5.
