Today's pick: French fries with especial sauce ($4.50) at Pommes Frites (123 Second Avenue, 212-674-1234).
Late at night a crowd forms outside Pommes Frites, the East Village's single-minded provider of incredible french fries, twice cooked in the Belgian style. There are a number of sauces available for a slight extra charge (including some bizarre ones like Vietnamese pineapple mayo and pomegranate teriyaki mayo), but we stick with the basics (mayo, mustard, ketchup), which are free of charge.
Walking into the place will really stink up your clothes, since there are a pair of fryers bubbling fiercely full time and the place is not well ventilated, so go just before you plan to do your laundry, and when you don't have an interview later in the day.
We had our cone of fries with "especial" sauce -- mayo, ketchup, and onions -- which is like the American answer to Quebecois poutine, only better. The raw onions will make your breath smell awful, so no kissing afterward.
