Dish No. 82: Chicken-Fried Chicken Livers at Cornbread Diner
Welcome to 100 Dishes to Eat Now, Fork in the Road's handy list of some of our favorite dishes -- old standbys and new finds alike -- compiled daily.
Today's pick: Chicken-fried chicken livers (lunch $5.95, dinner $7.50) at Cornbread Diner (1436 Flatbush Avenue, Brooklyn).
This diner is a supremely comfortable neighborhood joint, hitting that sweet spot between friendly and no-nonsense. The beauty of the chicken-fried chicken livers is the batter: craggy and crunchy, generously salt-and-peppered, piping hot and greaseless. Inside their crusts, the soft chicken livers offer up mild, mineral sweetness. You'll eat your way through the generous pile of them in no time.
A small feast of extras comes with the plate of livers, including the diner's namesake cornbread -- a moist, savory rendition served warm. Then there's soup or salad (choose soup, such as split pea), and a side, like completely wonderful collard greens or mac and cheese.
