Dish No. 87: Katsudon at Ennju

Welcome to 100 Dishes to Eat Now, Fork in the Road's handy list of some of our favorite dishes -- old standbys and new finds alike -- compiled daily.

Today's pick: Katsudon with miso soup ($9) at Ennju.

Ennju has long been a favorite pit stop for shoppers at Union Square, an off-price, cafeteria-style Japanese restaurant where you can get sushi already boxed, but recently prepared. The rest of the Japanese menu is also ably represented in good, but not spectacular, renditions: The long suit of Ennju has ever been price, convenience, and freshness.

Order katsudon from the cashier. It's a nicely fried pork cutlet cut into strips, mired in an oniony egg omelet with a salty tang, and deposited on a big bowl of white rice. Served with a cup of miso soup (there's a choice of two others, often including vegetable and hot-and-sour), it makes a satisfying meal, and you'll be out the door in 15 minutes. Japanese expats seem to love this place. 20 East 17th Street, 646-336-7004
