No. 56: Any doughnut from Dough.

It's Thursday, which means it's about the time of week when our self-control hits a downward spiral on toward weekend, and any illusions we had that this might be the week when we start eating healthily are crushed under a mountain of sugar, fat, and alcohol. We would gladly start down the path of regret on a Monday, though, if tempted by a doughnut from Dough, the Bed-Stuy bakery that also makes weekend appearances at the Brooklyn Flea. With texture that is simultaneously fluffy, dense, and chewy, these fried (but not oily) rounds are vehicles for striking, inventive glazes that are never cloyingly sweet: citrusy blood orange, tart hibiscus, lemon (which pairs nicely with blueberry jam filling), lightly spiced tropical chili, or salted caramel and chocolate. We can put back about a half-dozen before we begin to worry about what we might be doing to our already distressed arteries.

Later this year, we'll pen our Best of New York issue, our annual love letter to what's great in this town. When that paper hits the streets, you'll find our picks for the very best this city has to offer when it comes to dozens of cuisines, restaurants, dishes, and drinks. Until then, you can get a taste of our contenders as we count down, in no particular order, our 100 favorite dishes from around the boroughs, a list of laudable eats worth tracking down right now.
