Over on the City Room, Maria Balinska, the author of The Bagel: The Surprising History of the Modest Bread, is answering readers' questions about the storied baked good. So far, she's touched upon its origins, what makes it particularly Jewish, the creation myth surrounding the everything bagel, when it's appropriate to toast a bagel, and the endless argument surrounding the relative merits of Montreal and New York specimens (they're "just different," Balinska says). It's an appetizing and informative discussion, though one hopes Balinska will provide her expert opinion on the controversial practice of bagel scooping.
