Five Spots to Celebrate IPA Day in NYC

Today is IPA Day (or #IPADay, if you're joining the cause on Twitter), one of the most wonderful of all the made-up holidays because it gives us an excuse to go forth and consume beer. And unlike most of the other national days, this one actually has some context: Founded in 2011 as a way to link breweries, bloggers, and beer-mongers, the holiday celebrates this particular style because, according to founder Ashley Routson, it "represents the pinnacle of brewing innovation with its broad spectrum of diverse brands, subcategories and regional flavor variations."

We mentioned IPA Day in our events round-up this week, noting that you'll find IPA infused into a milkshake at the Hell's Kitchen location of 5 Napkin Burger. But assuming you actually want to consume, you know, a pint, we've rounded up five spots to celebrate.

Alewife, 5-14 51st Avenue, Queens You can usually count on this epic Queens beer bar to participate in any festivity that might entice people to drink more beer, and IPA Day is no exception: The tavern readied itself for the holiday by rounding out its draft and bottle list with a number of hop bombs. Wander in after 4 p.m. for pours of Green Flash Palate Wrecker, Avery Brewing Maharaja, or Nøgne Ø Two Captains Double IPA, among many others.

Jimmy's No. 43, 43 East Seventh Street This East Village beer stalwart is tapping a special brew today in honor of this momentous occasion: Bear Republic Brewing's Crazy Ivan, a Belgian IPA fermented with Trappist ale yeast. The spot promises to have additional pours of the style on tap and in bottle.

Isa, 348 Wythe Avenue, Brooklyn Founders Brewing is sponsoring a tropical-themed party at this Williamsburg restaurant, with live Caribbean-infused music from Bamboo Tim. So why hit this spot for IPA Day? If you wear a Hawaiian shirt, you'll be privy to a free Founders All Day IPA between 10 p.m., when the party starts, and 10:30. Because the only thing better than having an excuse to drink is having an excuse to drink for free.

The Pony Bar, 637 10th Avenue Beer lists change frequently at the Pony Bar, but as of this morning, the Hell's Kitchen outpost had four IPAs on tap, including versions from KelSo, Two Brothers, and Midnight Sun. Best part of all? No matter what you order, it'll be priced at $5 $6--which means you can sample all four drafts for a reasonable 20 bucks.

Top Hops, 94 Orchard Street, or Bierkraft, 191 Fifth Avenue, Brooklyn Perhaps you'd rather take your IPA home and enjoy it while posted up on your couch. Our favorite beer shops in the city are the Lower East Side's Top Hops, where you'll find hundreds of beers in bottle and at least a couple of IPAs on draft and available by growler, and Bierkraft, where you can match your pick from a well-curated selection of brews to a sandwich.
