Four Restaurants That Opened In NYC This Week

Four Restaurants That Opened In NYC This Week
Lauren Mowery

When one restaurant's doors close, another's open in fast-paced New York City, and every Friday, we'll fill you in on what opened up around town. This week: a beer hall is ready for Columbia students, the West Village gets a coffee shop, and shots and beer are being served together on Houston.

Bernheim & Schwartz, 2911 Broadway, 212-335-2911

Bernheim & Schwartz is a 250-seat beer hall located near Columbia University. The space offers beer, wine, and cocktails, as well as dishes such as pastrami Reuben spring rolls, chicken tikka masala wontons, and grilled bratwurst.

Boilermaker, 13 First Avenue

Kitschy Golden Cadillac threw in the towel a few months ago, and in its place is Boilermaker, a bar from much of the same team plus Erick Castro, who owns San Diego's Polite Provisions. When we went to the bar earlier this week, and we found a brown spirits-focused cocktail list, a 12-deep tap menu, and a list of beers and shots. Hungry? No worries, Boilermaker offers burgers, wings and other bar fare.

The Back Room at One57, 153, West 57th Street, 212-897-2188

The Back Room at One 57 is not a steakhouse, says its chef, it's a grill -- and it offers a number of carnivorous dishes. We visited earlier this week, and Chef Sebastian Archambault told us, "We have a beautiful double broiler. When I look at this piece of equipment I say, 'What can we do here?' To think about it, we can do beautiful meat, yes, but so many things. So I will use this equipment, this grill, to go through a line of ingredients that we are not used to seeing in an American grill." The Back Room at One57 is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily.

The Elk, 128 Charles Street, 212-933-4780

After being introduced to the world of coffee through her brother and cousin, Claire Chan opened her own house of brew, The Elk. The West Village café offers pourover coffee as well as a selection of teas from Harney & Sons. Diners can also shop The Elk's array of soaps, rugs, candles, and other home goods from local vendors.
