Set a stone's throw away from the Williamsburg Bridge, Miss Favela (57 South 5th Street, Brooklyn; 718-230-4040) is like an equatorial ray of sunshine in the colorless, frigid surrounds. The Brazilian neighborhood bistro offers a large selection of authentic fare, including a solid and super-cheap lunch special.

The lively decor is enough reason to visit during the doldrums of winter. Bright blue, green, and yellow splashes of color adorn the brick walls; vivid floral patterns sit atop the chipped-paint metal tables; multicolored patina chairs fill the room; potted palms sit in the corners. But the ambiance isn't the only thing this place has going for itself in terms of lifting you out of that seasonal funk. Every Monday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m., the cheery botequim (tavern) offers heaping portions of its simple and satiating prato feito lunch special for just $10.

For omnivores, there are options for all sorts of diets. (Sorry, vegetarians: This deal isn't for you.) Try the chicken milanese, steak with onions, or fried fish, each of which comes on a plate piled with rice and beans and collard greens. A squeeze bottle of house-made malagueta pepper hot sauce is brought out on the side — be careful: This stuff has some spice.

It's the ultimate in Brazilian comfort food. And the servings are huge, enough to slake even the heartiest of appetites. You may, in fact, need a nap when you're done.
