Here Are Eight Restaurants That Opened This Week

The year is off to a roaring start for restaurant openings — this week saw a spate of debuts that includes a pizza speakeasy, a ramen lab, and a couple of different places where you can get crab cakes and steak. Here are eight restaurants that opened in the city this week.

SRO (334 Bowery, 212-466-3301) You'll need to find the door inside Espoleta that leads to this pizza speakeasy, which pays homage to the Single Room Occupancies that used to line the Bowery, as well as the pies Giulio Adriani used to sling at Forcella. Once seated, look for a prix fixe menu that includes an appetizer, pizza, and dessert, plus drink pairings. Head to SRO's website for access, or email sropizza@gmail.com.

Ramen Lab (70 Kenmare Street) This long-anticipated ten-seat ramen house from Sun Noodle (which supplies most of the top ramen joints in this city with noodles) popped open its doors this week, and in its early days, it's slinging just two soups — a chicken ramen and a vegetarian miso ramen. You can supplement your meal with a little gyoza, and you should look for seasonal specials in the future. Once it finds its footing, Ramen Lab will also serve as a ramen educational center.

Darrow's Farm Fresh Takeout Restaurant (115 East 18th Street) With the goal of providing healthy food fast, Peter Darrow teamed up with nutritionist Julie Starr and co-chefs David Kupperberg (Pure Food & Wine) and Taylor Thorne (Eleven Madison Park, Jean-Georges) to create a menu of dishes packed with nutrients and built with local and organic ingredients. The breakfast list includes an egg sandwich with avocado, chia pudding, and steel-cut oatmeal; at lunch and dinner, you'll find a number of sandwiches, soups, and salads, plus "functional plates," which group together ingredients based on health-giving qualities (there's the antioxidant plate, for instance, and the stress relief plate).

Cooper's Craft & Kitchen (168 Eighth Avenue) A second location of this East Village craft beer bar is now pouring in Chelsea, offering a local-heavy tap list (you'll find rare international selections, too) and a menu of gastropub fare. The owners teamed up with Greenpoint Harbor, Peekskill Brewery, and Barrier Brewery to create a custom beer for the opening, which will be on draft tonight. Pair it to dishes like beer-battered fish tacos, pretzels and beer-infused cheese, and poutine.

Polo Bar (1 East 55th Street, 212-207-8562) Ralph Lauren's first restaurant made its entrance this week, unveiling a plush interior outfitted with leather banquettes and white tablecloth–topped tables. Look, too, for the polo match–themed mural. The menu offers what the restaurant says are Lauren's favorite dishes; food appears to be rooted in the exclusive supper clubs of yore. See the oysters, crab cakes, wedge salad (here, called a BLT), corned beef sandwich, strip steak, and burger.

Prova (184 Eighth Avenue) Donatella Arapaia, Sushi Nakazawa partner Maurizio de Rosa, and Ribalta's Pasquale Cozzolino and Rosario Procino debuted their Neapolitan pizzeria in Chelsea earlier this week. The menu lists both classic and creative pie constructions; you can try a Neapolitan pizza, or you can have your pie topped with sea urchin, crimini mushrooms and prosciutto, or roasted ham and baby artichokes.

Hunt & Fish Club (125 West 44th Street) This massive classic steakhouse began serving in midtown this week. Here, you'll find your tuna tartare, your jumbo crab cakes, your oysters Rockefeller, your caviar, and your raw-bar selections, and all of those precede the main event. Feast on brook trout, bison short rib stew, a bone-in ribeye, or a porterhouse for two.

Bonbonierre (92 Ludlow Street, 212-254-9100) This offshoot of a London nightclub opened in the basement of Hotel Chantelle this week. Decor was inspired by the bonbonniere Fabergé egg (which was, in turn, inspired by decorative bonbonniere trinket boxes): A glittering DJ booth is bedecked with crystals, mirrors line the walls, and LED lights flash across the ceiling. Look for specialty cocktails and bottle service on the drink list.
