I, Locavore--Old Field Wines
The Old Field Vineyards winery is family owned and operated, located in Southold New York, on the North Fork of Long Island. The property is a rambling old farm that has been in the Baiz family for generations. In 1974, Chris Baiz planted vineyards and started selling the grapes, and the family began making their own wine for sale in 1997. Along with the long rows of vines that lead down to the Sound, the farm also raises chickens, and you can buy a dozen ultra-fresh eggs along with your wine. Until this year, the tasting room was in an old, renovated chicken coop.
This newly released 2006 Chardonnay retails for about $17. Ninety percent is aged in steel and ten percent in oak, so it's got a really balanced crisp, minerally flavor, rounded out by just a little bit of oak. It's refreshing for hot weather, and grown and crafted just 90 miles away.
