Food doesn't get any more local than that: When dinner comes, I walk from the kitchen to the bedroom, snip a bowlful of baby lettuces, and then return to the kitchen to douse my salad with vinaigrette. The lettuce is often still warm from the sun, and tastes wonderful. The logic of the economics is inescapable, too. A packet of lettuce seeds costs, say, $1.20, and will make eight window boxes of plants, totalling two pounds trimmed. So instead of paying $16 a pound at the farmers market for baby lettuces, I've paid 60 cents per pound, or 15 cents per two-serving salad bowl. Now, if my fire escape were only bigger...
