In the Annals of Bad Ideas: West Village to Get a zPizza
In the space once occupied by Lafayette French Pastry, and more recently by a Burritoville, New York is getting its second zPizza, a "healthy" pizza chain that hails from dieter-central, Laguna Beach, California. The first branch is in JFK's terminal four. Aside from the fact that zPizza serves creations like the ZBQ pizza--barbecue sauce, barbecue chicken, corn, roasted peppers, and cilantro--there are two reasons that this is a bad idea.
First, Fork in the Road recently tried the zPizza at JFK, and found that the crust resembled cardboard, and the whole thing needed about six of those paper salt packets to taste reasonably good. By the low, low standards of airport food, it wasn't half bad, but in the world of New York pizza, it's way out of its league. Which brings us to the second reason this is misguided--location. Within walking distance of the soon-to-open zPizza at 289 Bleecker Street, you can eat far superior pizza at John's (278 Bleecker Street, 212-243-1680), Motorino (349 East 12th Street, 212-777-2644), Lombardi's (32 Spring Street, 212-941-7994), Arturo's (106 West Houston, 212-677-3820), and so on.
