Incredibly Cheap Eats: Elettaria's Crab Rangoon
If you're an ex-Angeleno missing Tiki Ti, or just someone who likes fruity rum cocktails, Elettaria's Tiki Mondays will do. The setting lacks palm fronds and shrunken heads, but the drinks--like a punch with four different rums and a mix of tropical juices--are classic and strike the right balance between sweet and boozy. The cocktails are $10, which is fair, since just one will make you tipsy, but it certainly doesn't qualify them as an Incredibly Cheap Eat....
The real bargains can be found on the bar's Violet Hour food menu. (Violet Hour is Elettaria's happy hour, running from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.) There's a selection of homemade hot dogs, including one topped with keema, India's answer to chili, for about $5. But the best deal is the crab rangoon for $4. The snacks are actually more like mini samosas than the wonton-wrapped rangoon you remember from a pupu platter, and each flaky little pocket is full of big hunks of crab, the traditional cream cheese having been jettisoned. Dip them in the Sriracha mayo that comes on the side. At five to an order, that's a fancy bar snack that you can actually afford.
