It's a Sausagefest at Sausage Inc.

New York City isn't short on hot-dog vendors, but occasionally the dirty-water dog just doesn't cut the mustard. For those times, Sausage Inc. (106 University Place, 212-414-4344) has come to the rescue. We popped into this recently opened shop to check out the goods.

The space, formerly Wok to Walk, doesn't offer a lot in terms of décor or lovely ambiance, but then again, do you really want that while eating a hot dog? Probably not. The menu features the following franks: Blanco (soft pork and basil), Chipolata (chunky pork and chipotle), Farmer (chunky beef, bacon, and herbs), Thanksgiving (turkey, stuffing, and cranberry), Artisan Hot Dog, and Veggie (spinach, potatoes, mushrooms, and mozzarella). In addition to ketchup, mustard, and relish, an assortment of dipping sauces ranging from cilantro pesto to cheese fondue can be added, too.

All the sausages are $5.51, and we opted for the Chipolata, which was downright enormous. Literally, like, a foot long. Sandwiched inside a soft pretzel roll and topped with caramelized onions, this was one massive lunch. The frank itself was quite juicy and well-spiced, with just a touch of char on the sausage, which made for a nice crispiness. Full of flavor and massively portioned -- what more do you need? All in all, a worthy addition to the neighborhood (and our lunch repertoire).
