Supposedly a police code for a marijuana bust, the aptly named 4/20 is celebrated by High Times subscribers nationwide. The pinnacle of the day? 4:20 p.m. That's when things go crazy (or so they say).
Getting into the spirit of things this year is East Village sandwich shop JoeDough where the outspoken chef, Joe Dobias, will offer his Stoner's Delight concoction for $4.20 on Friday starting at 4:20 p.m. until the store closes. That's a $5.80 discount on the grilled cheese sandwich which features cheddar, queso blanco, and cotija cheeses squished between eggy challah bread.
You can enjoy your gooey sammy on site at one of the handful of window-side stools or take it back to your apartment to nibble on while watching Half Baked. Although, while you're out, you might want to pick up "some sour-cream-and-onion chips with some dip, man, some beef jerky, some peanut butter. Get some Häagen-Dazs ice cream bars, a whole lot, make sure chocolate, gotta have chocolate, man. Some popcorn, red popcorn, graham crackers, graham crackers with marshmallows, the little marshmallows and little chocolate bars, and we can make s'mores, man. Also, celery, grape jelly, Cap'n Crunch with the little Crunch berries, pizzas. Two big pizzas, man, everything on 'em, with water, whole lotta water, and Funyuns." Yes, Funyuns.
