Kampuchea Will Close This Saturday

This week will be the last for Kampuchea, Ratha Chaupoly's four-year-old Cambodian restaurant on the corner of Rivington and Allen streets.

Chaupoly told Grub Street that he's closing the restaurant after service on Saturday night and that he plans to open something else in its place. Chaupoly explained that "[w]e were turning a profit ... but for the size, for the rent, the style of cooking, and the type of staffing I'd have to do there in order to get good cooks and make a great profit margin, it's just too much. We make a good profit margin, but it's not worth it down there."

Also, a lot of his clientele has up and moved to Brooklyn, suggesting that despite what Community Board 3 meetings may indicate, the Lower East Side is quieter than it used to be. Chaupoly is thinking of a new, more casual concept for Kampuchea's old home, and he plans to reopen the restaurant elsewhere -- no word yet if he'll follow the lead of his customers and head over the East River.
