Kin Shop's Spicy Duck Laab Salad, One of Our 100 Favorite Dishes
Dish no. 17: Spicy duck laab salad from Kin Shop (469 Sixth Avenue, 212-675-4295)
Kin Shop's menu designates the duck laab salad as very hot, and if you're sensitive to spice, you should heed the warning -- Harold Dieterle's kitchen doesn't hold back on the pepper. But it balances all that heat with a bracing flash of tart lime, which coats the minced duck and crispy bits of toasted rice. The salad comes in little boats of fresh romaine, and topped with pickled onions. Simultaneously refreshing and palate stimulating, it's a great introduction to a meal that should traipse next through curry, noodles, and a little roti. But if you stop by Kin Shop for lunch, the salad can serve as a meal on its own.
In advance of our 2014 Best of NYC issue, we're traipsing through the boroughs and divulging our favorite dishes of the year. They're presented here as a countdown, but we're listing them in no particular order. Consider this a guide to what's good to eat in this town right this very second.
