King Noodle's Ma Po Tofu Fries, One of Our 100 Favorite Dishes

After about a decade of once-novel but now-monotonous earnestness in Brooklyn restaurants--which plays out via exposed brick walls, cocktails made from local spirits (or taps pouring locally brewed craft beer), and farm-to-table fare--King Noodle feels like a breath of fresh (or, uh, pot-infused, beer-scented) air. The walls look like a highlighter threw up all over the place, drink choices stop at pitchers of Bud or a flaming scorpion bowl, and the menu reads like it was created in a college dorm room after a few bong rips. But impaired or no, we dig what the place is throwing down, and not just because its sprinkling Nacho Cheese Doritos on the carbonara (which, locavore movement be damned, is genius). Our favorite dish on the board is the ma po tofu fries, a mess of crisply fried potato sticks smothered in mouth-tingling Szechuan peppercorn-infused sauce, molten cheese, cubes of gelatinous tofu, and a tuft of scallions. Unsurprisingly, they eat like chili cheese fries--with enough heat to gradually numb your face.
