Kings County Distillery Is Moving to the Brooklyn Navy Yard

Kings County Distillery, subjects of the recent Voice cover story on Brooklyn moonshiners, have found a new spot to make their hooch. They're packing up their tiny spot on Meadow Street and moving to the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the distillery will be moving into a brick building built in 1905 known as the Paymaster Building, and the 7,000-square-foot space -- nearly 10 times their current space -- in the Navy Yard will be open for tastings and tours. (Their current spot can only handle tours on the odd weekend every other month or so.)

Spoelman also told us recently that he's since quit his day job working in communications at an architecture firm to become a distiller full-time. According to the paper, they'll also be able to hire more full-time distillers.

At present, there aren't many food- or beverage-related businesses in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, with most of the space being devoted to artists, craftsmen, and manufacturing businesses (though there are some food brokers and caterers). But the industrial park clearly represents a venue in the city where food-related businesses can develop their wares. Indeed, Andrew Kimball, president of the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation, said that many "localvore" [sic] food companies are looking to set up shop there. Could the Navy Yards be the next Bushwick? Time will tell.
