Land of Plenty's Szechuan Pork Dumplings, One of Our 100 Favorite Dishes

No. 30: Szechuan pork dumplings from Land of Plenty

A lake of chili oil and the addictive mouth-numbing heat of Szechuan peppercorns make these dumplings--along with the rest of the dishes at Land of Plenty--worth a trip to Midtown East.

When we're intent on burning our faces off with Szechuan peppercorns, Midtown East is not usually the first neighborhood we contemplate. But after our minds have wandered through the East Village, the vicinity of Times Square, and Flushing--the neighborhoods where many of NYC's best Szechuan restaurants live--we frequently end up at Land of Plenty, a subterranean spot that's just a stone's throw from Bloomingdales, Zara, and other upscale shops and yet blessedly bereft of shopping bag-bedecked tourists that rush up and down the avenues. Land of Plenty offers a staggering list of Szechuan dishes, many pooled in chili oil and liberally dusted with those characteristic mouth-numbing peppercorns. And while we consider each meal here a chance to try something new rather than revisit old classics, we can't get enough of the Szechuan pork dumplings. Thin wrapper pockets hug juicy, garlic-pounded pig; the dumplings are steamed and served in a lake of chili oil and ginger-tinged soy sauce, a liquid that bursts with heat, acidity, and umami.

Later this year, we'll pen our Best of New York issue, our annual love letter to what's great in this town. When that paper hits the streets, you'll find our picks for the very best this city has to offer when it comes to dozens of cuisines, restaurants, dishes, and drinks. Until then, you can get a taste of our contenders as we count down, in no particular order, our 100 favorite dishes from around the boroughs, a list of laudable eats worth tracking down right now.
