Mama Pho's Classic Bahn Mi, One of our 100 Favorite Dishes
Dish no. 40: Classic bahn mi from Mama Pho (580 Grand Street, 718-599-5015)
Serving Vietnamese cuisine to throngs of hungry Brooklynites, Mama Pho is a staple of the Williamsburg dining scene. This simple and humble restaurant is known for, as its name suggests, its rich and deeply flavorful pho, but it also serves one of the best bahn mi sandwiches in the city. Served on a freshly baked and toasted French baguette, the sandwich is a contrast of flavors and textures: a medley of julienned cucumbers, pickled carrots, fresh cilantro, and daikon radish play against the house-made pate spread. And consisting of mostly vegetables, the sandwich tastes light, with the richness of the pate not overpowering finished product. Enjoy it with the sriracha-based plum sauce for added heat and sweetness.
In advance of our 2014 Best of NYC issue, we're traipsing through the boroughs and divulging our favorite dishes of the year. They're presented here as a countdown, but we're listing them in no particular order. Consider this a guide to what's good to eat in this town right this very second.
