Market Watch: Tristar Strawberries
Consider the wonder of Tristar strawberries. Also known as "day-neutral strawberries," this hybrid was introduced in 1981, and is one of dozens of commercial varieties available. Where once you could get fresh strawberries only in the spring, this variety begins producing in late spring and continues throughout the summer, and even into fall. Which is the case in local farmers markets. You have to look carefully, but a few producers like Mountain Sweet (at Union Square Wednesdays and Saturdays) still have them.
Based on a cross that is closer to wild strawberries than many commercial varieties, Tristars are unspeakable sweet and blindingly red. But they lack the shelf life of most woody commercial strawberries, so you'd better eat them the day you buy them.
