The South Slope has a new watering hole. Mary's Bar, which opened in the old Smolen Bar & Grill space a couple weeks ago, features a dozen beers on tap, plus wine by the glass and daily drink specials.

Named in honor of Smolen's owner, Mary Smolen, the bar is decked out in pressed-tin ceilings, exposed brick, and a long antique-looking bar. The brains behind the operation are Stephanie Markowitz, the former general manager at Employees Only, and Sylvia Holden, a stylist and designer who has worked for Elle and Time Out. Locals will be happy to hear there's a pool table and darts, as well as free afternoon snacks -- always a nice touch.
