It was a banner year for New York City at the James Beard Foundation Awards; several of our fellow city-dwellers took home prizes in categories that ranged from Outstanding Pastry Chef to the Lifetime Achievement Award. Here's your guide to the NYC-based winners of the 2014 Restaurant and Chef Awards, including the stories we've written about these accomplished men and women.
April Bloomfield took home the Best Chef: New York City award for her work at the Spotted Pig; the gastropub was part of our list of 99 Essential Restaurants in Lower Manhattan and the site of one of our favorite dishes of 2013.
We recently spoke with Leo Robitschek about the pair of prolific bars he oversees; he and his team at the NoMad landed the Outstanding Bar Program honors.
Dominique Ansel's meteoric rise made him more or less a sure bet for the Outstanding Pastry Chef coronation; check out what the man had to say about his operation and then read about some of the inventions that propelled him to the top, including the Cronut, the s'mores pop, and the chocolate chip cookie milk shot.
A few years back, Brooklyn Brewery visionary Garrett Oliver spoke to us about creating The Oxford Companion to Beer. This year, he landed the prize for Outstanding Wine, Beer, or Spirits Professional for all of his work in the craft brewing industry.
David Chang represents New York in the Who's Who of Food & Beverage in America category. We've written much about the man's Momofuku empire, including a recent story on the return of the Momofuku ssam.
After decades in the biz, Le Cirque's Sirio Maccioni was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award. This living NYC legend has navigated the evolution of the restaurant industry, keeping his storied restaurant a relevant part of the fabric.
And finally, Jamie Bissonnette, who's also behind Toro, landed the Best Chef: Northeast prize for his work at Boston's Coppa. Read our review of Toro.
