Mighty Quinn's Burnt End Sandwich, One of Our 100 Favorite Dishes

Dish no. 30: Burnt end sandwich from Mighty Quinn's (103 Second Avenue, 212-677-3733)

Located more than just a few miles away from Memphis and Kansas City, New York City has never been known for its barbecue -- until now. Today, praiseworthy smoked meats can be found in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens; in the East Village, Mighty Quinn's is serving some of the finest in the whole city. The burnt end sandwich is arguably the finest example of what this place does. Charred, almost chewy cut ends of the smoked brisket are covered with house-made sauce and served on a freshly baked bun. The sandwich is best topped with vinegar-based coleslaw and slightly pickled cucumbers, which contrast nicely with the sweetness of the sauce. A mixture of textures and flavors, the sandwich should be enjoyed with a sweet tea and eaten at one of the many window seats.

In advance of our 2014 Best of NYC issue, we're traipsing through the boroughs and divulging our favorite dishes of the year. They're presented here as a countdown, but we're listing them in no particular order. Consider this a guide to what's good to eat in this town right this very second.
