Miss Lily's 7A's Buss Up Shut, One of Our 100 Favorite Dishes

Dish no. 8: Buss up shut from Miss Lily's 7A (109 Avenue A, 212-812-1482)
You'll likely buy or sell on Miss Lily's 7A the second you walk in the door -- you don't need to try a dish to decide whether you find the scene here enticing or repulsive. The colorful place bumps heady beats and looks like a clubhouse for models: women in crop tops take orders from stylishly attired parties spilling from booths, men behind the bar look like they just stepped off a plane from Miami. Even if that's not for you, though, it behooves you to take your chances at a table, because the food here can steal the show. The jerked meats are nice, but you should go for the buss up shut, which matches a crisp-edged, soft roti-like flatbread (that's the buss up shut, by the way) to grilled shrimp and a nicely nuanced curry vegetable stew, thick with peas and potatoes and tongue tickling with heat. You can order that stew on its own, too -- it still comes with that buss up shut, which adds nice chew to each bite.
In conjunction with our 2014 Best of NYC issue, we're traipsing through the boroughs and divulging our favorite dishes of the year. They're presented here as a countdown, but we're listing them in no particular order. Consider this a guide to what's good to eat in this town right this very second.
