Momo Sushi's Karaage, Our Cheap Eat of the Day
Karaage from Momo Sushi, 43 Bogart Street, Brooklyn, 718-418-6666, $9
Fried chicken joints keep proliferating, but the scene's not exactly saturated with Japanese versions. Check out this Bushwick spot's rendition of karaage, a small entree-sized portion that won't set you back much.
Tucked behind a door that's easy to miss, Momo's long communal tables are frequently full of sushi-loving Bushwick residents who come in for rolls, dome-shaped sushi bombs, and sashimi tastings. But the restaurant keeps a small list of other Japanese offerings as well, which includes soups, salads, gyoza, and some meat and cooked fish. Prices are on the affordable side for much of the list, but the best deal is the karaage, a $9 platter of Japanese fried chicken that's not only substantial enough to fill your belly (at least at lunch -- this is a small entree-sized portion as opposed to the typical three-nugget appetizer) but also one of the better versions of this dish we've had in the city. Moist hunks of bird are dredged in thick, spice-inflected batter and then deep-fried until golden; they're served with a garlic- and citrus-imbued sake-soy sauce mixture.
