Monte's Will Reopen in Early June

The second incarnation of Monte's is nigh: The Italian restaurant, which sat on Carroll Street for 102 years before closing in 2008, is scheduled to reopen in early June.

This news comes from Pardon Me for Asking, which has some details about the resurrected space and its new owners. As had been previously noted, the restaurant is now in the hands of Dominick Castlevetre, a local resident who has run numerous pizzerias.

PMFA reports that Castlevetre and his wife left the restaurant's original design largely intact during its extensive renovation, and have installed a wood-fired oven made in Naples. Their chef, who hails from Milan, has concocted a "creative Italian" menu that will include pizza, pasta made in-house, and seasonal dishes.

With any luck, it sounds like Gowanus may have a Nom Wah Tea Parlor or Rum House on its hands: a venerable if slightly dog-eared old business lovingly and unironically restored to appeal to new customers without alienating old ones, with nary a statement mustache in sight.
