More About Mervyn Johnson, Slain Owner of Merv's Bakery
The Wall Street Journal has more about the tragic death of Mervyn Johnson, the Crown Heights baker who was shot and killed on Tuesday evening as he walked from his car to his home. Johnson, 68, was the owner of Merv's Bakery, which he opened on Nostrand Avenue 27 years ago. It enjoyed great popularity among the neighborhood's Trinidadian community, who lined up daily for Johnson's breads and pastries. His butter bread -- a Trinidadian specialty -- was a particular favorite.
The motive for Johnson's killing remains unclear, though it may be related to a robbery last week at Johnson's apartment during which he was held up and robbed of $85.
