Murray's Cheese Represents
The French Laundry's Timothy Hollingsworth isn't the only one representing Team USA in culinary competition. While Hollingsworth is participating in the Bocuse d'Or in Lyon, France today and tomorrow, cheese mongers from our very own Murrary's Cheese (254 Bleecker Street) participated in one of the pre-events--the International Caseus Awards--essentially the Olympics of the cheese world.
Not surprisingly, France took home the top cheese honors, with Japan close behind. Team America had a disappointing showing at the last event two years ago, but their star is on the rise. Coached by Liz Thorpe, a manager at Murray's, and with two Murray's cheesemongers--Frank Meilak and Zoe Brickley--on the team, the U.S. did especially well in the display and wrapping portions of the competition. That's right, world-class cheese wrapping is happening at Murray's. Other portions of the seven-hour event included cheese cutting and a blind tasting, which is the area that the U.S. has the most catching up to the Euros to do. Still, with the number of artisanal cheese in the U.S. having doubled in the last two decades, maybe someday soonish we'll have the fromage equivalent of the Judgement of Paris.
